Monumental Inscriptions

Monumental Inscriptions is shorthand for the details on gravestones found in churchyards and cemeteries.Middlesbrough Reference Library has several hundred volumes of Monumental Inscriptions for Cleveland, Durham and North Yorshire. The list of these below arranges them in one alphabetical sequence by place with, alongside, the name of the church or cemetery.

The effort which has gone into recording the details in these volumes is an oustanding tribute to the work of transcription by the Cleveland Family History Society, the East Cleveland Heritage Group, and Christian Heritage. Their work over many years has ensured that the details have already been recorded and preserved for family historians from gravestones where the inscriptions are now illegible or which have been damaged or removed.

The Reference Library also holds on 4 CD-ROMs the National Burial Index (NBI) for England and Wales, second edition 2004.The NBI contains 13 million records and provides an index of burial entries recorded in English and Welsh parish, nonconformist,Roman Catholic and cemetery registers.Coverage is from 1538-2003.
