Boxing

Spennymoor Amateur Boxing Club / Plus Thai Boxing

This has got to be one of the hardest sports to photograph. Everything happens so fast and it's a case of trying to guess when someone will throw a punch. Again if you see it in the viewfinder you've missed it. Flash causes shadows on the fighters because of the ropes unless you get in very tight. ie. through the ropes.

It's not until you try this that you fully appreciate how good those classic photos are of the glove distorting the face and sweat frozen in mid air. If you are allowed to use flash, as I was, 400 asa film is fine though if this is not allowed (the ref has the say) very fast film is required. 800 or even 1600 asa. The spot lights will make shots very contrasty by casting shadows. Black and white would probably work better here with a bit of dodging and burning in the dark room. I found my 28 - 200 lens very useful. The 70 - 200 is too tight for many of the shots unless the venue allows you to gain elevation and photograph from distance.
