Basketball

Basketball wasn't as easy as I first expected and the main reason for this was that flash photography was not allowed. This meant loading up with 800asa film which still wasn't really enough and I could have done with pushing this film to 1600 or 3200. Because of the spotlights around the arena which would play havoc with the camera's light meter I took a reading through the lens on a player standing on the court before the match and set the exposure to manual using this reading. 1/125 sec at f2.8 which wasn't enough to freeze the action especially when close up. I found my best shots where at the wider end of my 70 - 200 lens and a 35 - 80 would have been much more useful. I have a manual focus 50mm f1.4 which I'll take along next time to allow a faster shutter speed. This match was at the Newcastle Arena between the Newcastle Eagles and The Edinburgh Rocks.

The following photographs are from my second attempt at basketball photography, the results were better for two reasons. Firstly, I knew more of what to expect from the previous game and learnt what worked and what didn't, and secondly, I used a 50mm f1.4 lens for many of the shots which allowed a shutter speed of 1/250 sec. which froze the action. This match was between Newcastle Eagles and Leicester Riders.
