Athletics

I was fortunate enough to get access into the 2001 International Athletics event at Gateshead for my first attempt at photographing this subject. The main advantage here is the variety of events to photograph. Look at the program at the start of the day and try to plan where you need to be when. To get at the end of the sand pit for Jonathan Edwards means missing the event before to claim your space but it's worth it. For this shot I watched a few other triple jumpers, got an idea of where they were landing, manually focused the camera on this point and used the motor drive on the camera to take a series of shots. At 4 frames per second there is a good chance of getting a good shot. Fast shutter speeds again are not essential unless you are photographing runners from the side. The pole vault was easy, just focus on the bar and wait till you see him. (that's the bar he jumps over, not where they sell beer!) Another tip is to watch for other superstars at the venue. I also photographed Linford Christie, Sally Gunnel and Brendon Foster who were officials at this event.
