S.S.Penton

The first shipwreck I remember was the "Penton". A small 600 ton coaster which came ashore on January 6th 1928. This cannot really be classified as abona fide wreck as it came ashore by accident. It had been tied up at the jetty in preparation for taking abroad a load of basic slag which at that time was was exported from Skinningrove as well as iron.

The Captain and his crew then adjourned to Timm's Coffee House leaving only the cook aboard. Whilst they were in the pub a sudden storm blew up from the north which broke both hawsers securing the boat to the jetty, sweeping the ship and the luckless cook on the beach at the beck mouth.

Unfortunately for the ship, this happened at the peak spring tide and consequently it had to remain there undamaged, till the advent of the following spring tides when it was towed off.

As written by the late Mr. H. Hart.
