This project is a partnership between Tees Valley Community Media (University of Teesside) and Destinations, UK online centre in Saltburn. It is one of 20 Social Impact Demonstrators throughout England. The S.I.D. projects will explore the links between social and digital exclusion, and how ICT and the skills to use it can benefit individuals, families, communities and society itself Click here for more info

Day Two of Libraries Tour

Day Two of Libraries Tour
12/04/07

Today the "digital tour" moved to South Bank and Dormanstown libraries (see below). In these 3 visits I've met with staff from every branch of Redcar & Cleveland Liraries. Not sure what they'd want to see I gave them the lot - The full digital monty! - First Time Online Package, Web Two Stuff, Internet Radio, Digital Music, Digital Story Telling, The Community Challenge Online Quiz, Blogging and Animation. Many of them had to be helped from the building.

For details of what the Librarians saw click on the "read more" link after the images below

Mel

I have now completed the Libraries tour and blogged it here:

http://www.tvcm.co.uk/index.php/sid

I kinda forgot what I was s'posed to be doing and though many of them thought they were coming to an animation workshop I gave them the lot - the full nine yards. It may well be that individual discussions need to take place and they all have my biz card. I'll set out below what we went through and you may want to forward it onto the participants as an aide memoir (though they did take notes)

The next step could be that I would run workshops for library staff or library participants or both

Much of the activity I described can be found somewhere on www.tvcm.co.uk

FIRST TIME ONLINE

This is a UFI package aimed at new users. Just needs a little bit of hand holding and then users can go at their own pace following the audio track. I will send details separately for people to look at this. John Hanna at Loftus has experimented with this and tried it out on a few guinea pigs

WEB TWO

The various (and ever growing) online tools to do almost anything. I've run a web two workshop at Loftus Library (ATTACHED) which left a legacy of a Loftus Library Blog (if a little sparsely used) There are links to some web 2 applications on the Community Media Club website www.tvcm.co.uk/cmc (Links) The Community Media Club runs at Destinations Saltburn on Wednesday evenings 5 to 8 pm and is a free drop in facility.

BLOGGING - VIDEO BLOGGING

I mentioned the Loftus Library Blog but also showed some other examples such as www.afrobecky.co.uk in which a young Middlesbrough woman kept a web diary (blog) of her trip to Africa to help aids orphans. Another one was a video diary (Vlog) in which kids attending a Film Festival in Finland kept a record of their experiences for everyone back home to follow www.tvcm.co.uk/strangedreams/ - I mentioned that the open source software on our server can be configured to create a walled garden so that only those logged in can see the content created and only when someone in authority clears it does it go live on the Internet. Some ideas suggested for this were "Friends of Saltburn Library Blog" and a "Reading Club Blog"

COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

I mentioned that we facilitate the digitisation and web publication of community newspapers.

www.loftustowncrier.co.uk

There is an issue with the uploading of the Town Crier at Loftus Library which seems to have developed after recent upgrades and developments when IE7 was installed. The installation of FIREFOX which is a free open source alternative to IE may get round this. (Firefox is very highly regarded)

BLOGZENES

I neglected to mention this but a blogzene (made the term up myself) is a mixture of a blog and a magazine. A multi Media Magazine actually - a web publication run just like a newspaper/magazine

IMAGES

I mentioned that creating, manipulating images used to be the numero uno activity till animation knocked it off the top slot. This can include repairing old photos or creating new designs. This could also lead to a more formal digital image course at Destinations in Saltburn. This is UCPD (University Certificate of Professional Development) and UCPD may soon also be offered at Skinningrove Riverside. I pointed out the community image archive at Hunwick www.hunwick.org.uk (click on time line) What I forgot to mention was another activity, the creation of "PICTURE WALLS"

DESTINATIONS - SALTBURN

I mentioned that Destinations was a community learning centre offering in partnership with the University many qualifications but that there were also many informal activities such as the community media club: www.tvcm.co.uk/cmc

AUDIO

I referred to Audactity as word-processing for Audio eg copy and paste and all that. IT really is very easy to use and as it is free and open source could perhaps be installed on Library PC's

AUDIO - INTERNET RADIO

By combining audio recording with blogging we can create blogradio or Internet Radio.

I recently ran a couple of seminars for NIACE in Leicester. In the afternoon session they came up with this (it was Friday!)

http://www.tvcm.co.uk/blogradio/index.php/niace

They had a great time - perhaps an exercise of staff development of R&C libraries?

AUDIO/IMAGES - DIGITAL STORYTELLING

By combining audio and still images it is possible to create "digital stories" and I showed some examples. This is very easy to do and again only uses free or open source software. The stories can then be published online. www.tvcm.co.uk/cmc/uploads/VIEWSWITHTITLES.wmv]

COMMUNITY CHALLENGE
I talked about the Community Challenge Online Quiz. Up to four teams can compete at once and they can be anywhere in the world. Larger numbers of teams can be accommodated by arranging a knockout tournament like the 52 team "Challenge the Nation" contest. Perhaps some quiz competitions could be conducted between Libraries. It is quite easy and very effective and runs on free software on our server developed by the University. The challenge is here www.community-challenge.com

Some more info here www.tvcm.co.uk/comchallarch/

DIGITAL MUSIC

I mentioned this because I wanted to encourage the creation of original msuic for use in animation productions. Either by the animators themselves or by others willing to collaborate. I showed a piece of free software called rebirth (see link below) and another called Ableton Live which is quite expensive but is on the East Cleveland Laptops housed at Destinations which are available on a sessional basis.

ANIMATION

An finally the numero uno community media activity. As I said this is great for groups of people as it involves team work and all kinds of skills: Story telling, story boarding, set design, character voicing, character design, photography, movie production. If that sounds complex it's not. We have produced animations using nothing but free software but have moved on to a piece of software costing
