School Fire 1980
30/07/05

On thursday the 13th March tragedy struck when the school was burnt down.
Extracts taken from headteacher Lloyd Buxton's log were as follows :-
Thurs. 13th March - Disaster! the school was broken into and virtually the whole of the junior school was burnt down. The fire was reported between 7-00 and 7-30pm and ten fire fighting appliances were quickly on the scene the school was blazing fiercely. Two boys aged 10 and 11 - pupils of the school were apprehended and later charged with arson.
Fri. 14th March - Teachers met to discuss the situation. Fortunately the 'secondary part of the school and the kitchen were unaffected. Mr. Moyes, senior advisor and Mr. Wood, assistant director for school buildings proposed reopening the school on the following tuesday.
Mon. 17th March - The whole of the school staff assembled to clean up and salvage anything possible and arrange classrooms with surplus furniture. Other schools supplied equipment.
Tues. 18th March - Business as usual. We had enough writing materials but were practically without reading material or text books. Five classrooms were operational.
